President-elect Donald Trump has announced Linda McMahon, his transition co-chair, as his nominee for Secretary of the Department of Education.
Trump confirmed the decision in a statement Tuesday night, following reports from CNN, and it came after it became evident that McMahon would not be selected for the role of Commerce Secretary. Earlier that day, Trump appointed another transition co-chair, Howard Lutnick, to lead the Commerce Department. Lutnick's candidacy for Treasury Secretary had previously sparked competition with hedge fund manager Scott Bessent.
In his statement, Trump expressed confidence in McMahon’s qualifications: “Linda will use her decades of leadership experience and deep understanding of both education and business to empower the next generation of American students and workers, making America number one in education worldwide. We will return education back to the states, and Linda will lead that initiative.”
McMahon, a significant Republican donor and former executive in professional wrestling, previously served as the Administrator of the Small Business Administration under Trump from 2017 until her resignation in 2019, when she took on the role of chair of America First Action, a pro-Trump super PAC.
